1966 Ford Police Cars & Emergency Vehicles   (updated 09-12-03)

I know this is not your typical Police vehicle and it certainly is not a 1966, but I got a kick out of this picture.

The pictures below are of an authentic Mariposa County, California, Sheriff's Police Cruiser.  According to the current owner, the car has regular exterior door handles, interior door handles, door locks, window cranks, arm rests with ashtrays and seatbelts.  Other standouts: Leece Neville 60 amp alternator w/ dual belt pulley, "certified calibration" sticker on speedometer lens (while the picture does not clearly show the sticker, note that the speedometer shows 2MPH increments), 3" front drum brakes, and in this case, transistorized ignition.  Comparing the standard Cruiser equipment as listed in the center picture above, this car was optioned with the C-6 transmission and 3.00:1 ratio, Equa-Lok rear axle.  The car also has period-correct Motorola radio and gun rack (the flashlight is located in the rack).  A view from the backseat is included in case time has slipped you by.  This Custom 4-door Sedan is registry # 770 and the door data plate reads:

Another California Police car is shown below.  What makes this City of San Bernardino, California patrol car exceptionally interesting is that it is currently in use.  The period correct radios are still shown but upgraded units are tucked under the seat.  It is not known when this Silver Blue (Color Code "Y") car was converted to official use by the city.  Often used for PR work, this unit still patrols the city streets writing the occasional speeding and parking ticket.  This Custom 4-door Sedan is registry # 1711 and the data plate reads:

VIN 6J54C106882,  Body 54E, Color Y, Trim 12, Date 01K, DSO 71, Axle 1, Trans 6

And here is another authenticated (www.copcar.com) cop car.  Don't let the plain-Jane looks of this Custom 2-door Sedan fool you.  This ex Oregon Highway Patrol Police Interceptor was fitted with the P-code 428-4V Police Interceptor V-8, 360 hp @ 5400 rpm, 459 ft-lbs @ 3200 rpm, 10.5:1 compression ratio.  It could catch up to just about anything in its day.  This car is registry # 1251 and the door data plate reads:

VIN 6P53P163324,  Body 62E, Color M, Trim 12, Date 02C, DSO 34119, Axle 6, Trans _

Another Custom 2-door Sedan which is believed to have been officially used in Canada as a patrol car is registry # 1790.  The special order D.S.O. code may very well explain the Trim Code of OD.  Even though that code is not listed for the 1966 Ford full-size line-up, it was confirmed by the owner as being stamped on the data plate.  This car's door data plate reads:

Police vehicles are often cloned and here is a nice example.  This car was on eBay but the owner never got back to me with the data plate codes.  He made no attempt to pass this off as original.  Imagine seeing all those red lights coming up behind you.

The following two pictures are also from www.copcars.com but were not verified on the website if authentic.  The first picture is of a Kissimmee, Florida patrol car and the second picture, of a Virginia State Police (VSP).  The VSP photo looks to be period correct.
