The Brazilian Connection
At the end of the 1966 model year, Ford (U.S.A.) shipped the tooling for their Galaxie 500 4-door sedans to Ford S.A. (South America), which was located in Brazil. Ford S.A. produced the 1966 U.S. version of the Galaxie 500 4-door sedan from 1967 to ????, with the same bodylines and grille of its U.S. counterpart and very minimal changes to the interior appointments, particularly the dash. Engines available were Ford's 272 cid and 292 cid V-8's, rated at 168 hp & 173 hp respectively. The car remained a left-hand drive and there were far fewer interior trim patterns available than those offered in the U.S.
Beginning in 1971, variations of the 4-door sedan started to emerge. The LTD and Landau. They sported different grilles, front parking lights, tail lights and interior trim patterns were the predominant changes but the basic body lines remained the same through 1975. In 1976, the headlights were no longer stacked.
An interesting piece of information from Luiz Tinoco, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
"This piece of information might interest you. The Brazilian Ford started the
production of its trucks and pick
ups in the late fifities. They used, at first the 272 engine and soon started
making the 292. The Brazilian
Y-Blocks were made in the Ford foundry in Taubate, a Sao Paulo State city. In
1967 Ford released the
Brazilian Galaxie, that was the American 1966 Galaxie. It was equiped with the
292 Y-Block. Brazilian
Galaxies and LTDs were equiped with Y-Blocks until 1975. From 1976 to 1982, when
the Galaxie
was discontinued, the engine used was the Windsor 302 V8 imported from Canada."
